
Genetics and Food Reactions: The Insights We Can Gain and the Limits We Need to Remember
Food: Innocent Until Proven Otherwise
If you’ve been in my world for a while, you have likely picked up on my hesitation to always blame the food.
That does not mean food never matters.
Food can absolutely trigger symptoms. It can add to the load your body is already carrying. It can also provide comfort, nourishment, pleasure, and the energy needed to get through a long Tuesday.
Food matters.
It just rarely acts alone.
The more useful question is often not: What food caused this reaction?
It's one (or many) of these:
Why did my body respond this way, this time?
Why was the tomato perfectly fine last week but not today?
Why do leftovers bother me during one season and not another?
Why do my food reactions seem worse every spring?
Why does a stressful week change what I can tolerate?
Why does poor sleep make everything feel a little louder?
Those questions give us somewhere to dig in.
Understanding Your Body Changes Your Decisions
Much of what I teach comes back to one basic idea:
When you understand your body better, and understand more of what it may be telling you, you can make better self-wise decisions.
That includes food choices.
Based on what you know about your body and your current situation, you may proactively choose a food you know your body handles well under similar circumstances.
Or you may pass on it today without creating a new forever rule.
There is flexibility and grace in being able to anticipate how your body may respond.
That is ultimately the challenge, right?
The Story Comes First
When we start looking for tools to understand the body, I will almost always return to the story first.
People sometimes think their story is the long part we need to get through before reaching the useful information.
Your story is full of useful information.
I'ts the context. The bigger picture. The way we begin identifying patterns, changes, and small details that may matter.
A single symptom rarely tells us as much as a constellation of symptoms viewed alongside your story.
Your history may show us that reactions became worse after an illness. Or during a season of prolonged stress, or after a medication change. Maybe it was when sleep became less reliable. Or every spring, when pollen arrives and the histamine bucket is already filling.
Sometimes the pattern is sitting there in plain sight.
We simply need enough space to see it.
Then There Is Genetics
Genetics is the sleeper tool. It's also how I got started in this world. (Story for another day.)
Genetics can help us understand some of the why behind the events in your story.
Most of the time, when we hear about genetics in healthcare, the conversation is related to disease risk. Breast cancer genes. Colon cancer genes. Conditions that carry a great deal of weight, expectation, and concern.
The genetics I most commonly use tell us more about how your overall biochemistry works.
These variations are not necessarily good or bad, right or wrong.
They are part of what makes you, you.
Your genes help direct thousands of processes happening in your body every day.
They influence enzymes, receptors, transporters, inflammatory signaling, nutrient use, hormone processing, neurotransmitter activity, histamine breakdown, and many other bits of biochemical housekeeping.
A genetic variation may mean that one of those processes works a little differently.
Sometimes faster. Sometimes slower. Sometimes with different nutrient needs, especially when demand increases.
That tendency may never become noticeable.
Or it may become more relevant under certain conditions.
Suppose your genetics suggest that you may clear histamine less efficiently.
That does not mean histamine is a problem for you now or that it always will be. In fact, you may never think much about allergies or hay fever.
Then spring arrives.
Pollen increases the amount of histamine your body is already managing. You sleep less because you are congested. You are tired, perhaps a little stressed, and eating more leftovers because cooking every evening sounds unreasonable.
Suddenly foods that were fine in January feel less fine in April.
The food did not necessarily change.
Your genes did not change.
The amount your body was being asked to manage did.
That is a useful distinction.
The Cornerstones Still Matter
This is where the Four Cornerstones of Epigenetics remain useful:
food
stress
sleep
environment
They are not four separate assignments to complete perfectly.
They are four places where your daily routine and surroundings can affect how much demand your body is managing. And we can make changes in every one of them.
Think about the advice doctors have given for years.
Sleep enough.
Eat fruits, vegetables, and more fiber.
Reduce stress. (Ha!)
Avoid smog and spend more time in greenspaces.
We were mostly asked to accept those recommendations without much explanation.
Now genetics and biochemistry can help us understand more of the how.
We can see how high stress and less sleep may affect inflammation, allergies, digestion, hormone signaling, and detoxification pathways.
Getting a little nerdy here, but this is where I tend to do the deep dives. I love when there is science to support the things we have been muttering about for decades.
Food may increase or reduce demand.
Stress may change digestion, inflammation, blood sugar, hormone signaling, and nervous system activity.
Sleep affects repair, immune function, appetite, pain sensitivity, and the amount of reserve available the next day.
The environment includes pollen, mold, chemicals, temperature, infection exposure, relationships, and the spaces where you spend your time.
Your genetics may help us see where your body is more likely to become overloaded, which is often when reactions become more noticeable.
The cornerstones help us understand what may be adding to the load right now.
Your story shows us how the pieces have actually come together in your life.
Genetics Does Not Provide a Verdict
A genetic report cannot tell us exactly what your body is doing today.
It may suggest a tendency toward slower histamine breakdown, but it cannot tell us that histamine explains every reaction.
It may show a variation related to methylation. It cannot tell us that you need a large dose of methylated vitamins.
It may point toward differences in inflammation, hormone processing, nutrient use, or neurotransmitter pathways.
But genetics cannot diagnose you from a colored box on a report.
Genetics also cannot tell you which food you will tolerate next Thursday.
A genetic result may help explain part of the pattern.
The lived pattern, your story, still gets the final vote.
Useful Information Should Help You Decide
I come back to one question when looking at genetic information: Does this help you make a more self-wise decision?
Maybe it helps you notice that your food reactions are worse during allergy season. That might lead you to choose fresher foods for a while, protect your sleep, reduce other known triggers, or discuss allergy support with your clinician.
Maybe it helps explain why a certain supplement feels too stimulating. You might adjust the dose, try a different form, or decide you do not need it.
Maybe it suggests a nutrient pathway deserves attention. You may choose to check a lab before adding another supplement bottle to the cabinet.
Maybe the genetic clue fits your story beautifully.
Maybe it does not fit at all.
Both answers are useful.
Each one gives us another piece of information about how your body responds to the world around you.
Genetics should help you understand the pattern and choose a next step.
It should not hand you another identity, another source of fear, or a list of rules you are expected to follow forever.
Another Piece of the Story
You do not need genetic testing to begin understanding your body.
Your symptoms, timeline, patterns, food reactions, sleep, stress, and environment already give you a great deal of information.
Start there.
Genetics may add another layer.
It may help explain why certain events in your story affected you the way they did.
It may show us where your system has less reserve, where demand tends to pile up, or why your reactions change under different circumstances.
It is one more clue.
But with or without a genetic report the goal is still the same:
Understand your body a little better. See the pattern more clearly. Then make the next decision from there.
60-Second Self-Care
Think of one reaction that seems inconsistent.
Perhaps a food feels fine sometimes and not others. Maybe your symptoms change with the season, your cycle, stress, sleep, or how fresh the food is.
Finish this sentence:
“My body seems more reactive when __________.”
Then add:
“One other thing that may be adding to the load is __________.”
You do not need to solve the whole pattern today.
Just notice what else may have been in the room with the food.
Remember - that food is potentially innocent of all crimes!
